Job description

Institution in the Education sector.

  • Serve as Technical Director on at least one show per semester, and will work closely with all designers and directors in making construction and materials decisions regarding theatrical set designs;
  • Bring an enthusiasm for mentoring and working with young theatre artists, for supervising student designers, and for working with professional designers;
  • Work with a staff Assistant Technical Director (ATD)and a Scene Design Fellow to oversee all aspects of set construction and installation, rigging, stage machinery, paint application and prop acquisition on all departmental productions, coordinating with Lighting and Sound;
  • Teach within the Theatre Design and Production Program in an area of expertise, and advise Technical Production students, support audition and recruitment activities;
  • Serve on School/University committees as appropriate.
  • More specific responsibilities in support of the above include:
  • Overseeing supervision and development of work study students skilled in technical theatre, and participating in running labs in Scene Shop, teaching construction techniques to students at all levels, and overseeing students assigned to painting and props;
  • In conjunction with ATD, running all technical rehearsals and strikes on Theatre Division productions;
  • Preparing work calls, build schedules, and give input into production calendars, working with the other production departments, to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Overseeing maintenance of theatre facilities, working with University Physical Plant as needed, and coordinating, maintaining, and updating all safety protocol training for students, faculty, and staff using the scene shop for classes in technical areas.
  • Helping to plan budgets and provide oversight and maintenance of scene shop inventory, including monitoring equipment, prioritizing and integrating new equipment purchases; and
  • Creating working drawings with ATD and Scene Design Fellow for construction and installation purposes
  • MFA in Theatre with an emphasis on Technical Direction/Theatre or an equivalent combination of training and professional experience.
  • A deep understanding of emergent technologies matched by a driving passion for mentorship, students and education.
  • Knowledge of CAD drafting, rigging, carpentry, and metalworking, and a familiarity with projection technology, theatrical sound, and stage properties.
  • An ability to work with others in a collaborative work environment to further strengthen the conservatory's cutting-edge undergraduate TDP programs, and to recruit and develop emerging student talent. An emphasis will be placed on candidates who are able to help students transition from academia to the professional world.
  • An ability to contribute to the conservatory's commitment to diversity and inclusion. The ideal candidate will demonstrate through teaching, professional activities, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods.
  • Experience in facilities management within a higher education context is preferable.
