Job description

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of bridges and utilities - Pipe work, Form work for bridges, and/or Grade work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Reviews documents and plans, making sure all questions are answered, before proceeding with any activities.
2. Examines blueprints, plans and profiles to determine dimensions of structure, and grade or profile of road or pipeline.
3. Works from surveyor's layout and cutsheets; determines line and grade where necessary.
4. Directs and trains crew in performing work as shown on contract drawings and specifications within the production budget of job estimate.
5. Acts as OSHA defined "competent person" on job.
6. Selects materials and structural units, such as lumber and forms, to ensure conformance with provisions of Project.
7. Plans ahead to ensure that appropriate materials are on hand when needed.
8. With Superintendent and Project Engineer, plans sequence of activities on the Project in two-week schedule planning.
9. Assigns workers to such tasks as operating machinery and equipment, cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework or laying pipe.
10. Inspects work performed by subcontractors, to ensure conformance with specifications.
11. Supervises workers engaged in building structures such as cofferdams, support of excavation, and concrete forms.
12. Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
13. Knows crew members by name. Maintains contact list.
14. Conducts daily "Huddle" with crew: explains in detail the work to be accomplished and how it is to be accomplished; trains inexperienced crew members.
15. Interprets company policies to workers. Enforces and abides by Company disciplinary procedures when dealing with employee problems.
16. Evaluates ongoing safety issues on job and makes changes where necessary.
17. Enforces safety regulations and use of Personal Protective Equipment.
18. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
19. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
20. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
21. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
22. Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
23. Maintains time and production records: detailed and accurate time sheets, with verified quantities included and detailed locations of work performed.
24. Time sheets turned in on time.
25. Keeps job team informed of progress and problems.
26. Estimates, requisitions, and inspects materials.
27. Sets up machines and equipment and supervises use.
28. Maintains detailed daily job diary.
29. Holds meaningful weekly safety meeting for crew and files report on attendance and content.
30. Performs activities of workers supervised.
31. Minimizes punch list; finishes work activities.

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this Crew. May manage 1 Lead Person who supervises a total of 2 to 3 employees in the Crew. Also directly supervises 3 to 5 non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Five years related experience and/or training.
Experience with bridge carpentry/form work, water/storm lines, and/or grading.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
